Peaky Blinders | Style Guide
Hemant Varshney
While the rough around the edges, early 20th century British style may be a bit much to wear in its entirety in 2019, elements of the aesthetic shown on Peaky Blinders are as relevant today in men’s fashion than ever before. Thick, heavy fabrics, wool cropped trousers, sturdy boots, and over sized coats were all staples in the 1920’s English man’s wardrobe. Every modern wardrobe should have some staple items of clothing that pay homage to the post World War 1 era.
When it comes to outerwear, your coat should be long and heavy enough to withstand the depths of Winter and made with sturdy fabrics like wool. Dark charcoal grey’s, black and earthy greens all signatures, and muted patterns like herringbone or Tweed are also relevant.
Layering was key in the 20’s, with many opting to pair their overcoat with a matching waistcoat and cap.
Trousers were wide-legged and tapered to crop at the ankle in materials like wool and tweed. The legs were a little wider which gave much needed shape and silhouette to an otherwise looser fit.
